Neck pain is a common condition that can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain. The neck, composed of seven vertebrae supported by numerous muscles and ligaments, acts as a bridge between the head and torso, enabling head movement and flexibility. Neck pain often arises when these joints, muscles, and ligaments become irritated or inflamed.
While occasional neck pain is common, it should not be ignored. Approximately 17% of adults experience neck pain and discomfort at any given time. Causes can range from poor posture and abnormal sleeping positions to sports injuries and whiplash. In rare cases, neck pain can result from growth abnormalities, infections, tumors, or cancer.
At Commerce Chiropractic Center, Dr. Shayda Mankooei specializes in managing and relieving neck pain through chiropractic care. Chiropractic treatment offers a holistic, non-invasive approach to addressing neck pain by focusing on the musculoskeletal system and enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities.
Chiropractic adjustments are generally safe, but they may not be suitable for all conditions. People with neck pain caused by bone fractures, severe arthritis, infections, or severe osteoporosis should consult a medical doctor. Although rare, neck manipulation can sometimes cause blood vessel damage or stroke. Dr. Shayda Mankooei will carefully assess your health history to determine the appropriateness of chiropractic treatment.
During your first visit, Dr. Shayda Mankooei will conduct a thorough health history and physical exam, which may include assessing spinal mobility, neck curvature, range of motion, and muscle development. Diagnostic imaging like X-rays may be ordered to further evaluate your neck pain.
If manual manipulation is deemed necessary, you may be asked to sit upright or lie on a padded table. Dr. Mankooei will use her hands to gently rotate or stretch your neck, which might produce a popping or cracking sound. Additionally, she may use an activator-adjusting instrument, a small handheld device that applies fast, low-force pressure to the neck joints.
Multiple sessions are typically required to correct neck pain. Initially, you may need two or three sessions per week, with the frequency decreasing as your neck pain improves.
In addition to spinal adjustments, Dr. Shayda Mankooei may use other treatments to alleviate neck pain, such as:
